Psychology and Cycles of History

It was Mark Twain who said, “History doesn’t repeat itself, but it often rhymes.” The first and second stanzas below are separated by 92 years, or about three generations:

The Business Plot, also called the Wall Street Putsch and the White House Putsch, was a political conspiracy in 1933, in the United States, to overthrow the government of President Franklin D. Roosevelt and install Smedley Butler as dictator. Butler, a retired Marine Corps major general, testified under oath that wealthy businessmen were plotting to create a fascist veterans' organization with him as its leader and use it in a coup d'état to overthrow Roosevelt.” https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Business_Plot

February 24, 2025: Far-right podcaster Dan Bongino was named the FBI's new deputy director. This is the same former Secret Service agent who says that power "is the only thing that matters," checks and balances be damned. Last May the 2020 election denier threatened Democrats in a social media post, calling them "scumbag commie libs" and predicting that "things will end really badly for them" before issuing an ominous warning. "Libs are the biggest pussies I've ever seen…But they're not ready for what comes next." https://boingboing.net/2025/02/24/new-fbi-deputy-director-dan-bongino-on-liberals-theyre-not-ready-for-what-comes-next.html

February 25, 2025: Conservative attorney George Conway…opined that Republicans "just want to burn it all down. I don't see any rationality in what they're doing other than that it is a performative attack on the government, and it is an attempt to destroy what they perceive to be as the enemy, which is the very government that they are charged with administering. That's the only way to explain almost everything this administration has done." Conway asserted that the "burn it all down" ideology is what led Trump to appoint Robert F. Kennedy as Health and Human Services secretary, Tulsi Gabbard as director of national intelligence and former Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) as attorney general (who was replaced by Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi)…and assailed centibillionaire Elon Musk's firing of federal workers—particularly those in charge of managing nuclear weapons—who he eventually had to hire back. "Basically, Donald Trump wants to have revenge on the United States of America. You cannot figure out who should stay or go unless you know what the hell's going on with the government, and these guys don't care." https://www.rawstory.com/george-conway-2671219411/
